Red Bull Quicksand, touted as the toughest mile race in the world will be held for the first time in Kenya on one of the best-known Oceanside towns of Diani.

Runners and fitness enthusiasts will be able to test their mettle against 250 other competitors in this innovative and grueling race.

Three years after its thrilling inception in the seaside town of Margate in the UK, the race comes to Kenya joining 5 other countries in the series this year including Japan, South Africa, Egypt, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine.

On top of the obvious challenges that come with running on sand -runners expend 1.6 times more energy on sand than running on a road surface – the course includes sandy climbs, and trenches giving competitors a full test of endurance, and speed.

“We are delighted and greatly honoured that Red Bull Quicksand is coming to Diani. A world-class event meets a world-leading destination and the choice of Kongo River Estuary as a venue could not have been any better. I take this opportunity to welcome all adventure seekers and fitness freaks to Diani, rest assured of great fun and warm hospitality” said Mohammed Hersi – Director. Baobab Beach Resort & Spa on the announcement of the event.

The man-made ‘sandcastle’ obstacles will tower over the competitors, forcing them to climb vertically over the loose terrain, creating a challenge to even the most hardened of athletes. With starving lungs and burning calves, competitors who advance will face the course all over again. The event follows a knockout format with runners progressing through heats and semi-finals to reach the grand finale, in what could be the most challenging mile you ever run.
