The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has urged Kenyans to take advantage of the current voter registration to take part in the coming polls.

IEBC Chairman, Wafula Chebukati said that Kenyans who are eligible for voting have one week to register to enable them to participate in the forthcoming General Elections.

“We had projected a target of 4.5 million new voters but the Commission has only managed to register a total of 800,462 voters by the close of the day yesterday and a total of 125,266 transfer requests from existing voters,” Chebukati said in a statement sent to newsrooms.

The chairman added that the turnout of the National Enhanced Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise has been low in an exercise that has entered its third week.

“Our staff is in every ward in the country ready to enrol you so that you may exercise your democratic rights,” Chebukati said.

Regarding the National Enhanced Voter Registration activities in By-election areas, in a press statement sent to newsrooms, the Chairman announced that the exercise remains suspended in Kiambaa Constituency as well as Kiagu and Mahoo County Assembly Wards.

“Consequently, ECVR activities that had been suspended as required by law in Nguu-Masumba County Assembly Ward for a by-election exercise, resume this week to afford all eligible citizens in the said County Assembly Ward an opportunity to register as voters, ” Chebukati said

Chebukati also called on Kenyans seeking more information on the ECVR performance on Counties, Constituencies and County Assembly Wards to follow the link
