Suspected serial killer Masten Wanjala has been killed by a mob, the police have said.
Wanjala, 20, was killed at the Mukhweya village, Bungoma county after he escaped from Jogoo Police Station police custody in Nairobi, on Thursday.
Bungoma County Police Commander Musyoki Mutungi said the suspect sneaked into his parents’ home but was noticed by suspicious villagers.
“He arrived at his parents’ home last night but he was spotted by neighbours. After sensing danger, Wanjala opted to move into a nearby house,” Mutungi said.
The police said that they were not sure how he managed to travel from Nairobi to his rural home in Bungoma.
“It is the curious villagers who first identified him and went ahead to kill him even before the police could be informed,” the police boss said.
“So far the body is still at the scene and we have deployed security agents all over the place.”
Wanjala was expected at the Makadara Law Courts on Wednesday, October 13, before he escaped from custody.
“This was noticed when they were taking over the report office and cell sentry duties. They informed the D/ocs who was in the report office minuting cases in the OB,” reads the report.
“The deputy OCS informed the OCPD Buruburu and raised alarm and the area was combed to re-arrest the prisoner.”
Three police officers who were on duty were arrested by their colleagues from the Nairobi Regional Criminal Investigations Office for allegedly aiding the escape of Wanjala.
Police Inspector Philip Mbithi, Police Constables Boniface Mutuma and Constable Precious Mwende are still in police custody.
